Chapter1
Jennifer Griffin found out that her husband Brayan LeBlanc had an emotional infidelity because of a file.
Out of curiosity, she clicked on the only Excel file titled Revenge on the laptop.
It had photos of diary pages.
"I got married because of Catalina Colbert. She dumped me, but I was head over heels in love with her. To forget her, I married a girl who was like her."
When Jennifer saw the first photo, she started crying.
She could tell how cold Brayan was when he wrote that. There was no feeling in it at all.
"I promised Catalina that I'd love her forever, no matter what."
Jennifer got goosebumps and immediately turned off the laptop.
She grew up in a single-parent family, and her mom was in the hospital. To be honest, marrying the heir to a big listed company like the LeBlanc Group was way out of her league.
The way she met Brayan was like a romance TV show, and so was what happened next.
It all started when Brayan had a car accident, and the driver who hit him ran away. She was the one who carried him to the hospital and saved his life.
Then everything just fell into place, and Brayan told her how he felt.
It was Valentine's Day, and he gave her a huge bouquet of pink roses to show his love.
Flowers were super expensive that year, and with it being a holiday, a bouquet like that cost a fortune, causing a big buzz at school.
Jennifer loved that bouquet so much that she put it by her bed, even though it made her end up in the hospital.
She was allergic to pollen.
But she never told Brayan about it, so every time they went on a date, he would give her a bouquet of pink roses.
Jennifer got hitched to Brayan before graduation. During their marriage, she became a full-time homemaker.
Brayan's job kept him busy, and he needed someone who could put her heart into running the house.
His mom also pointed out that he had a sensitive stomach, and home-cooked meals were way better for him. Plus, no matter how good a housekeeper was, she couldn't replace a wife. A wife's job was to take care of the house, support her husband, and raise the kids.
So during the day, Jennifer would cook, do the laundry, and handle all the chores.
But now she found out that Brayan had chased after her to get back at some other girl.
Jennifer didn't hit the sack until it was almost daylight. She got woken up by the alarm after sleeping for less than three hours.
With dark circles under her eyes, she stood at the entrance of Craway Medical Center, waiting for Brayan. The early spring morning air was pretty nippy, and it made her nose run like a leaky faucet.
At 8:59, she got a WhatsApp message from Brayan: "There's an urgent project at work, and I need to go to Priusiland on a business trip. Sorry, I can't be there with you. Just go in by yourself. I've talked to the expert. I'll try to be home tonight."
Jennifer pulled her coat tighter around her and went into the hospital alone. When she came out, she was holding an ultrasound report.
It said she was two months pregnant, but it was a threatened miscarriage.
This was her first pregnancy, her first baby with Brayan.
She touched her belly, but she didn't look happy.
The doctor said a threatened miscarriage wasn't too bad, but she needed to take it easy and rest.
Chapter2
She took out her phone, wanting to tell Brayan the news.
The phone kept beeping, and she felt excited but also nervous.
Brayan would be happy, right?
Before last night, she wouldn't have even thought twice about that.
Finally, the call got through.
"Brayan, I..."
"I'm in a meeting. Don't call unless it's important."
The call ended right away, and all Jennifer could hear was the busy signal.
The cold wind made her feel kind of empty inside. She took the phone away from her ear, and just then, a news alert popped up.
The headline said: "The LeBlanc Group's Heir Shows Up at the VelvetRose New Product Launch, Spends a Lot of Money to Make His Lady Smile."
Jennifer's heart skipped a beat.
There was only one heir to the LeBlanc Group, and that was Brayan.
And the high-end brand VelvetRose's launch was right in Nexford.
Jennifer's fingers were shaking a bit, partly because she was feeling a little cold.
When she opened the news, Brayan was easy to spot in the picture.
He was handsome and tall, with long, straight legs, and he wore a suit that looked sharp and fancy. He was the kind of guy who always looked great in group photos.
In the past, whenever Jennifer saw news about Brayan, she would look at the pictures for a long time because he was good-looking.
But this time, she closed the webpage fast.
On a whim, she checked her Instagram and saw that Ronan Palmer had just posted something new.
Ronan was Brayan's high school classmate.
"VelvetRose's classic pink diamond necklace, limited to only ten pieces worldwide, and now Brayan's girl has got one too!"
The photo showed only the girl's fair neck, with the dazzling pink diamond necklace around it.
Whoever Ronan was calling "Brayan's girl," it sure wasn't Jennifer.
Jennifer put away the ultrasound report and took a taxi home, her lower belly still aching a bit.
Once home, she remembered she hadn't bought groceries yet, so she went out and bought all the things Brayan liked. When she got back, she washed the veggies, picked them, and started cooking. Before she knew it, it was evening.
Around nine, Brayan came home.
"I forgot to tell you, I had a business dinner tonight and I've already eaten."
His voice was flat, and his handsome face didn't show much.
Jennifer took the suit from his hand.
After three years of marriage, it was the first time she saw that all the hair gel was gone from his hair after a night out. It looked like he had just taken a shower and smelled fresh.
His suit didn't stink of alcohol. Instead, it had a light cologne scent, and it wasn't the same suit he wore in the news pictures.
Jennifer didn't ask anything. She went to get his pajamas quietly. But then, out of nowhere, he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.
The minty smell from his hair was nice, and through the thin silk of her pajamas, she could feel him getting a bit too handsy.
As a housewife, she rarely went out. When Brayan had to bring her to family dinners at the LeBlanc's manor, he acted cold towards her in front of others.
But things were totally different in bed.
He had a strong desire, great stamina, and amazing technique. He also had a charming face, especially his perfectly curved, smiley lips that could drive anyone crazy.
Under normal circumstances, Jennifer wouldn't have any complaints and would go along with whatever he wanted.
Chapter3
But with everything that had happened in the past two days, and considering she was pregnant, she really didn't feel like making love.
"Brayan, my stomach isn't feeling so great. Can we not..." Jennifer started to say, but before she could finish, Brayan picked her up and threw her onto the big bed in the bedroom.
"I'm preg..."
She didn't get to finish the word "pregnant" before Brayan's weight was on top of her and his rough kiss was on her lips.
He was kissing her while unbuttoning his shirt and unbuckling his belt, looking down at her with eyes that were burning hot.
Surprised to see that usually quiet and easygoing Jennifer was actually fighting back, he gave a kind of strange smile and used his belt to tie up her thin wrists.
"All you gotta do is be a good wife," he said.
Then he kissed her again, really hard, and she didn't get a chance to say anything else.
Jennifer had no idea what was up with Brayan tonight, but he was so rough that she ended up passing out.
When she woke up, the room was dark. She felt really uncomfortable in her stomach and below, and she wanted to go to the bathroom to clean up, but then she heard Brayan talking on the phone in the living room.
"Brayan, Catalina is totally wasted. You gotta get over here now!"
At a time like this, Jennifer had to be thankful that Ronan had such a loud voice.
In the living room, Brayan looked tall and straight, like a bolt of lightning. The dim light made his face look sharp, and his eyes were deep like a night sky.
To Jennifer's surprise, Brayan had a cigarette dangling from his other hand.
In her memory, he didn't smoke, at least not at home.
"Come on, man, how long are you gonna keep this fight with Catalina? She's back now, so it's time to make up, right?"
The quieter the night, the clearer Ronan's voice came through on the other end of the line.
Jennifer heard every word clearly, and her breath got stuck in her chest.
"Ronan..." Brayan's face was serious, and his eyes were sharp.
"I'm already married."
It was like a big relief for Jennifer, and she felt like she could breathe again.
"So what? Can't you get a divorce? That washed-up wife of yours, who can't even take care of herself without you, is nothing compared to Catalina."
"But I don't want a divorce."
"Why not?"
"I can't bring myself to leave her."
Jennifer's eyes got all watery, and she almost made a noise.
Brayan's words meant more to her than any expensive gift he had ever given her.
After three years of marriage, even the coldest heart would have thawed, and she never thought she had done anything wrong.
She always did her best with the laundry, cooking, and all the chores.
And she also made sure Brayan was satisfied in bed at night.
She felt like her hard work paid off. Brayan cared about her more than she thought, and tonight's phone call proved it.
Jennifer's heart, which had been pounding in her throat, finally settled down. She turned to go back to the bedroom. Eavesdropping wasn't cool, and there was no point in doing it anymore.
She loved Brayan.
And Brayan loved her.
"Having a wife who's always willing to put in the work and never complains? Of course I'm not gonna let her go!"
Jennifer's foot stopped dead in its tracks.
"Money isn't the issue here. It's about having someone who really cares.
Chapter4
"Jennifer is different from Catalina. She doesn't have much going for her, no degree and no job. She's just a housewife, always busy with cooking and cleaning. My grandpa likes her, my mom thinks she's easy to handle, and my whole family is happy with her. Why would I divorce her?
"She's perfect for being a wife at home. She doesn't need much. Just a little attention now and then, and she'll be happy."
Ronan on the other end of the line seemed to get it. "Oh, I see. But Catalina..."
"Send me the address. I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, Brayan rushed out the door.
Jennifer waited until she heard the door shut before she dared to make a sound.
She was crying.
Tears poured down her face, blurring her vision. Waves of nausea washed over her, and her stomach hurt like it was being sliced by a knife.
She clutched her stomach and squatted down, sweating from the pain. Warm liquid dripped down her legs.
It was blood.
Everything went black in front of her eyes.
When she opened her eyes again, she was lying in a hospital bed.
The room was empty except for a nurse.
"Excuse me, I..." Jennifer's voice was rough.
"Ms. Griffin, you had a miscarriage," the nurse said.
Jennifer was in the hospital for a whole month, and every night she had dreams.
In her dreams, Brayan would come to the hospital to see her. He'd stay by her bed all day and night, smiling as he listened to the baby in her belly.
Every time she woke up, she was crying her eyes out.
The baby was gone.
And Brayan never came to see her even once.
He said he was on a business trip to Priusiland, but he sent his assistant, Jamie Elliott, to bring her flowers twice. They were pink roses, and he also paid all the medical bills.
Jennifer thought about giving the flowers to the nurses a few times, but she couldn't do it. She'd rather sneeze every day than let them go.
Since she was only two months pregnant, the abortion didn't hurt that much. But touching her belly from time to time had become a habit for her.
Just thinking about the little life that had once been inside her made her nose tingle with sadness.
That was her first baby, the child of her and the man she had loved for ten whole years.
And now it was gone.
She cried herself to sleep every night, and her recovery didn't go so well. But she couldn't stay in the hospital forever. They asked her to clear out the ward to make room for new patients.
In the empty ward, Jennifer was packing up her things to leave when a stranger walked in.
The girl had a pretty face, perfect makeup, and was wearing a pink velvet off-the-shoulder dress that hugged her body, with a shiny necklace around her neck.
Jennifer recognized the necklace. It was the same fancy, limited-edition pink diamond necklace from the luxury brand VelvetRose that Ronan had shown off in his Instagram.
"Hey there, I'm Catalina Colbert, and I went to high school with Brayan."
Catalina introduced herself, and Jennifer couldn't help but think about the name.
She thought, "Catalina?
"Yeah, it's her."
When Catalina reached out her hand, Jennifer shook it politely.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Jennifer Griffin, Brayan's wife. You can call me Mrs. LeBlanc."
Catalina's smile froze for a second.
But she had clearly seen a lot of the world, and her expression quickly got back to normal.
Chapter5
"I came here today to apologize."
Catalina looked down, and her sad expression made Jennifer feel a bit sorry for her.
"I had no idea you went to the hospital that day because you were pregnant. If I had known, I wouldn't have asked Brayan to go to the VelvetRose launch with me. And that night when I got drunk, it was Ronan who called Brayan. I didn't think he'd come to pick me up, and it ended up causing you to lose the baby. It's all my fault."
She looked guilty as she handed a basket of fruit to Jennifer.
"This is my way of saying I'm sorry. You gotta take it, or I'll feel terrible."
Seeing how good Catalina was at pretending, Jennifer couldn't help but laugh. "I don't see why I can't take a cheap fruit basket. It's not like you're giving me the necklace around your neck as an apology."
Catalina looked a bit embarrassed and cleared her throat. "I heard you're getting out of the hospital today."
"Yeah."
"But I think you should stay here a bit longer. You know, when Brayan sees you, he'll be reminded of the baby you lost, and that will make him sad. He has been in a bad mood these past few days, and I've been the one cheering him up. We went on a trip overseas, went fishing on a yacht, watched sunrises and sunsets..."
Seeing Catalina's dreamy expression, Jennifer didn't care whether what she was saying was true or exaggerated.
"Yeah, my husband is a nice guy. He cares about his friends, especially his high school pals, and takes them out on his yacht every week. He even gave my best friend a diamond necklace worth 1.6 million dollars!"
She didn't like lying, but if lying could upset Catalina, she didn't mind spinning a few more tales.
Catalina clenched her fists. "Good to know you're being so understanding."
With that, she turned to leave. But as she reached the door, she turned her head and added, "Oh, Brayan can't come get you. He's exhausted and is taking a nap at my place now."
After saying that, she finally left.
Like a flat balloon, Jennifer felt confused, not angry.
She asked Jamie and found out that Brayan was at the company.
So, Catalina had lied.
Jennifer didn't trust Catalina's story. She wanted to get the truth from Brayan herself.
Before leaving the hospital, she went to get some herbal medicine.
Brayan had a stomach issue, and his mom didn't like modern medicine. So, they always used herbal medicine. Jennifer cooked the herbs herself. She knew exactly how much of each ingredient to use and how to control the heat.
The herbal medicine at home was almost gone. If it weren't for all the recent drama, Jennifer would have restocked it already.
Carrying a big bag of herbal medicine, she arrived at the LeBlanc Group.
The receptionist recognized her because she had delivered food to Brayan before. But that time, the receptionist thought she was a maid.
"Ms. Griffin, Mr. LeBlanc is busy with guests now. You can give the medicine to Jamie. He's in the assistant's office."
"Okay."
Jennifer didn't feel like telling the receptionist that she wasn't "Ms. Griffin" but "Mrs. LeBlanc."
She took the elevator to the top floor. She wasn't there to find Jamie. Instead, she went straight to the entrance of the general manager's office.
The frosted glass door wasn't fully closed, and through the crack, she saw Brayan standing in the office with Ronan.
"Brayan, you said you could move on from Catalina, but you killed your own baby."
Chapter6
Jennifer, who was about to knock, froze at the entrance.
"It has nothing to do with Catalina.
"No matter whether she comes back or not, I would never have a kid with Jennifer."
"Why?"
"People only have so much energy. Once she has a kid, she'll change. Now, my grandpa likes her, and my mom is okay with her. But once a kid is born, it won't be that simple." Brayan took a drag of his cigarette. For the first time, his charming smile looked annoying to Jennifer.
"I knew she was pregnant, so I acted rough on purpose, messing up her uterus. The doctor said she'll never have kids again."
His calm, almost cold voice made it sound like he was talking about something that didn't matter to him at all.
Jennifer was soaked in cold sweat on the other side of the door.
"You're being so harsh on Jennifer. So who's gonna keep your family going in the future? Isn't it still gonna be Catalina?"
Brayan didn't say yes or no to Ronan's guess.
After finishing his cigarette and wrapping up his chat with Ronan, he walked out of the office and noticed something that Ronan had missed.
It was a bag of herbal medicine.
Jennifer practically ran to Spring Nursing Home like she was escaping.
She couldn't stay a minute longer at the entrance of Brayan's office in his company.
She felt like puking.
Every word that came out of Brayan's mouth made her feel so sick that she wanted to throw up.
So that was the guy she had loved for ten whole years.
He had chased and married her to get back at another girl.
And now he had killed their baby for the same reason!
Ten years of love, three years of marriage. All of it was just a joke!
Jennifer quickly wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and walked into the nursing home.
Ever since she got married to Brayan, her mom had been moved here from the hospital.
Her mom wasn't in great health to begin with, and then a global virus hit, leaving her with dementia.
Even though her mom didn't recognize her anymore, there were some things she wanted to say.
In the past, her mom's biggest wish was for her to have a happy marriage.
So she wanted to tell her mom that she had let her down.
In the evening, after leaving the nursing home, Jennifer went to a law firm nearby.
As dusk fell, Nexford was lit up with twinkling lights and bustling traffic.
When Brayan got home, he found the house dark.
He turned on the lights, and they shone on the herbal medicine and a bouquet of pink roses in his hands.
In the big, empty house, there was no steaming, delicious food waiting.
And Jennifer was nowhere to be seen.
Brayan frowned. He put down the flowers and the herbal medicine, then calmly took out his phone to call Jennifer, but the call didn't go through.
He had never thought that Jennifer wouldn't be home one day, but he still put on a record like he always did and listened to his favorite Chopin Nocturne.
An hour.
Two hours.
Three hours passed, and Jennifer still wasn't back.
Brayan got up and checked the wardrobe. Most of Jennifer's clothes were still there - all the pink ones he had given her.
But the two blue suits she had before getting married were gone.
Just then, a package was delivered.
It was for Brayan.
He didn't remember ordering anything.
Chapter7
The package was a big cardboard box. When he unpacked it, he saw all kinds of stuff inside.
There were pink everlasting roses, pink diamond necklaces, pink Hermes bags, bright pink high heels, cherry pink dresses, pink diamond watches, gold decorations, peach pink scarves, branded perfume, pink diamond brooches, car keys, a pink diamond ring...
Brayan's face darkened. He was getting angry inside.
All these things were the gifts he gave Jennifer when he was trying to win her over back then.
The pink diamond ring was the one he used to propose.
As he looked through the stuff, he saw that even after all these years, the price tags were still on.
The only thing that wasn't from him in the box was an envelope. He pulled out the papers inside.
The night view of Nexford was beautiful, all glitzy and glamorous.
The old house on Sanford Street hadn't had its lights on for years, but today, for some reason, the lights were on from early evening all the way till late at night.
Jennifer spent half the day cleaning the room until it was clean. It was pretty simple, but it looked nice and cozy.
Back then, she had her mom with her. But now she was all by herself. It was a lie to say she wasn't lonely.
She was holding her phone, thinking about whether to call her bestie from high school, Lydia Gomez.
But before she could call, the doorbell rang all of a sudden. She hung up and went to open the door.
At the door, Brayan was standing there, tall and straight, and it gave Jennifer a real shock.
"What are you doing?!"
With a crash, Brayan threw the divorce papers right in her face.
Her face turned red. She had never seen Brayan so mad before, and she got scared and lowered her head.
"Why so quiet? Why did you run away from home for no reason? Stop being so childish!"
Brayan reached for Jennifer, but she shied away.
"Brayan, I wanna get divorced."
"Why?"
"Because..."
"Because of Catalina?"
Hearing the name, Jennifer looked up. Brayan was standing there with his arms crossed. His face, handsome like out of a painting, twisted into a scornful sneer, which hurt her eyes.
Seeing Jennifer not saying anything, Brayan thought it was funny.
Now that Catalina was back in the country, there was no way to keep their thing a secret. And he didn't even wanna try to hide it.
"Jennifer, did you learn to play games now? Let me be honest, Catalina was my first love, and I proposed to you to get back at her. But in the three years we've been married, I've never done anything to hurt you!"
The last sentence made Jennifer's eyes tear up.
She wanted to yell at Brayan, "What about the baby? Didn't you kill it yourself?!"
But she felt it was useless.
Her chest felt tight, like a big rock was sitting on top of it. She struggled to take a deep breath.
At this point, divorce was the best way out for her and Brayan. It would put an end to her foolish and failed love and marriage.
