Chapter 1 The Wife's Revenge
Vanessa Dorsey's husband, Nathan Powell, had cheated on her since day one of their marriage.
And more ironically—five years into her marriage, she was still a virgin.
She couldn't help wondering what it felt like to cheat. To find out the answer, she came to this hotel to experience it tonight.
"If you want me to stop, just say it," the guy murmured as he kissed the corner of her lips.
According to her friend, he was the most sexually experienced man in town.
"No, just go on," she replied, her voice trembling yet determined.
It turned out to be an amazing night. As pleasure finally overtook her, a broken cry escaped her lips uncontrollably.
While she was still trying to catch her breath, her phone rang. "Dr. Dorsey, could you come in? We need your help. A young female patient has a severe ruptured ovarian cyst. She needs an emergency laparoscopy now!"
She threw on her clothes, left some cash on the nightstand, and rushed to the hospital without even saying goodbye.
Her colleague, Helen Irwin, strode in right after she stepped into her office. "The patient is in the OR already. Let's go."
"What's the cause?" she asked.
"What else but Valentine's Day hormones? We've got two ruptured cysts already tonight, and this one's the worst—pelvic fluid, adnexal mass, U-hCG negative. She's already in shock. OR now!" With no time to spare, Helen scribbled her name on the work log and then hauled Vanessa toward the OR.
Vanessa, known as "Dr. Miracle", was a renowned lead surgeon in Brookford. Given the severity of the condition, she was the only one Helen would trust with this case.
Patients' lives mattered the most. Vanessa performed the surgery quickly and professionally.
Forty minutes later.
She pushed open the OR door with a stern look on her face, only to see a man standing outside, his back facing her.
"Sir, there's a fundamental difference between sex and violence. Brute force causes injuries. Surely, you know that, right? Pursuing thrills in violence is no different from committing a crime. Technique matters in intimate acts..."
The man slowly turned around as she spoke.
Vanessa froze, her eyes widening in disbelief.
It was Nathan, her husband!
No wonder his back seemed so familiar.
So... on Valentine's Day, her dear husband had ruptured another woman's ovarian cyst? No way—she had just operated on Susanna Berger?!
"Sir, you think with that thin layer of protection, you can just do whatever you want? Sex isn't like chopping wood! More force doesn't bring more pleasure! Violence only leads to terror and pain. Can you be any more ignorant?" Her voice turned sterner and more agitated.
The patients and their families in the hallway all glanced her way.
They were all thinking the same thing—as a doctor, she seemed a bit too harsh. But she did have an offbeat sense of humor.
Nathan stood there in silence, his expression darkening. Obviously, he was mad.
Chapter 2 Have Fun
"Poor Dr. Dorsey—she's probably just letting off steam. Though she's been married for five years, her rich husband won't even lay a finger on her. Instead, he spends almost every day with Ms. Berger, his unforgettable love."
"Totally. He abandoned Dr. Dorsey on their wedding night and never came back. Now she has to face his mistress and even treat her. I feel so bad for her."
Vanessa went back to her office.
Looking at the closed office door, some doctors and nurses whispered among themselves.
In the office.
Vanessa picked up her glass, gulped down the water in one go, and slammed it down, her gaze icy.
"Vanessa, I don't love you at all. Susanna's the only one I love, and that will never change. I was forced to marry you, and I'll never touch you. From now on, just play the role of a dutiful wife. Don't ever fantasize about anything else. Love? Such a thing doesn't exist in our marriage. It's in name only. Stay out of my life—we'll each live as we please."
Five years had passed. However, she still remembered every word Nathan had said to her on their wedding night.
She clenched her fingers tightly.
When they were kids, she used to trail behind him, calling out sweetly, "Nate! Nate, wait for me..."
Back then, he'd always stop and wait for her with a smile. Then he'd take her hand, stroke her soft hair, and joke about how clingy she was.
It convinced her that he loved her just as deeply as she loved him. Otherwise, when his grandmother, Madeline Powell, proposed an arranged marriage, she would never have agreed.
***
Vanessa blinked hard, fighting back tears. Then she stood up, walked into the bathroom, and dashed icy water across her face. As she lifted her gaze, she stared at her delicate, lonely reflection in the mirror, and her heart clenched hard.
She had been suffering for the past five years.
How did she manage to endure all the humiliation for so long?
Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from her bestie, Kathleen Cowan.
The instant the call connected, Kathleen's mischievous giggle rang out. "Well, Vanny? How was last night? Did you have fun?"
Vanessa blushed right away.
"Kathleen, what did you put in my drink last night?" Her voice was filled with anger.
As a professional doctor, she had come to realize Kathleen must have spiked her drink. Or she'd have never let that escort have his way and slept with him.
"Nothing ... but a little aphrodisiac," Kathleen admitted with a grin.
Vanessa's tone grew stern. "Kathleen, you've gone too far this time."
Obviously unconvinced, Kathleen started to lecture Vanessa. "Come on, Vanny. Nathan's with his mistress every day, and you're twenty-five already. If not me, you would have still been a virgin. If he gets to have all the fun, why can't you do the same? I did this for your own good. You should've stopped wasting time playing his dutiful wife, OK?"
"Forget it. I'll give you a pass this time. But if it happens again, you're toast! And seriously—last night stays between us, or we're done as besties," Vanessa hissed before hanging up the phone, her heart still pounding from the scenes last night.
Kathleen pouted, snorting, "Yeah, yeah. Classic you—hanging up on me whenever we talk about this."
Just then, a patient knocked on the door. Vanessa started to focus on work right away.
She was taking off her white coat after work when her phone buzzed. Glancing at the screen, she was surprised to see Nathan's name flashing on it.
Chapter 3 I Love Her
After a moment of hesitation, Vanessa answered and teased, deliberately sounding casual, "Hey, Honey. This is Vanessa, not Susanna. Are you sure you didn't dial the wrong number?"
Nathan fell silent for a second before saying, "Vanessa, I'm downstairs. I'm here to take you home."
Vanessa was dumbfounded, wondering if she had misheard.
In their five years of marriage, this was a first.
But then she realized she had operated on Susanna today, which explained why he was here.
Sighing, she decided not to dwell on it. After five years, it was time for her to let go of the past.
"Sure," she said with a grin before hanging up.
Then she stepped into the bathroom, splashed water on her face, touched up her makeup lightly, and then headed downstairs with her small bag over her shoulder.
At the hospital entrance.
The luxurious Maybach sedan instantly drew everyone's gaze, but what truly captivated onlookers was the strikingly handsome young man leaning against its window. His thick eyebrows, deep-set eyes, and the cigarette dangling between his fingers exuded an air of refined nobility.
"Hey, Honey," Vanessa walked toward him and smiled brightly.
Nathan couldn't help but frown as his gaze fell upon her face.
Today, she wore a pristine white dress. With her straight, silky hair cascading over her shoulders and delicate features, she looked utterly charming, and her dazzling smile was simply breathtaking.
The passing patients and their families all looked her way, stunned by her beauty.
Yet Nathan scoffed in disdain.
The prettier a woman, the more calculating she was. Every time before getting to see him, she'd always dress up meticulously.
She was so desperate to attract his attention.
He was long used to her little game.
"Get in the car. Grandma wants to have dinner with you," he said, his voice devoid of any emotion.
Of everyone, Nathan respected Madeline the most. He had never once disobeyed her orders.
No wonder he was here.
Vanessa glanced toward the ward, smiling, "I see. But what about Susanna? After a night of pleasure, shouldn't you be with her? She's just had surgery today and needs you the most."
Nathan's expression froze a little—he was probably embarrassed.
He had called before and was told Helen was on shift today. Who could have known it was actually Vanessa who performed on Susanna?
He replied, his voice still icy, "It's got nothing to do with you. I love her, and of course, I'll take good care of her. Mind your own business."
"This is where you're wrong. This time, she is my business. In case you've forgotten, she's my patient. As her doctor, her well-being—including mental health—is my responsibility. If she's upset, it'll hinder recovery and delay treatment. Besides ... I'm also doing this for your sake, if you know what I mean." After saying this, she couldn't hold back anymore and burst into laughter.
The corner of Nathan's lips twitched before he yanked open the rear door and said coldly, "Just get in. Grandma's waiting."
"Fine. For Madeline's sake, I'll play along this time." She shrugged and then sat in gracefully.
He got into the driver's seat and started the car.
In the next second, she saw a pink doll on the passenger seat, and a pang of bitterness overwhelmed her uncontrollably.
It was Susanna's doll.
She hadn't known it before until one day, when they went to visit Madeline and she awkwardly took the passenger seat.
He had flipped out right away, grabbing the doll and putting it in his arms while demanding that she sit in the back. He had even warned her that only Susanna, his beloved, got to sit in the passenger seat, and she simply didn't deserve to.
Till today, his harsh words still stabbed her heart like a sharp knife.
It explained why he had opened the rear door for her. By doing this, he also maintained distance from her.
Wasn't she pathetic or what?
She let out a self-mocking laugh before putting on earbuds and listening to music. As certain melodies moved her, she'd smile, looking completely absorbed in it, as if Nathan hadn't existed.
Chapter 4 Our Deal
While driving, Nathan kept stealing glances at Vanessa in the back seat through the rearview mirror.
She maintained a casual, radiant smile the entire time, looking completely different from this morning. It seemed operating on Susanna had hit her hard—after all, she hated Susanna so much.
There was something different about her smile now. Though he could sense it, he couldn't quite pinpoint what had changed.
One thing he knew for sure—he didn't like this feeling, and an inexplicable irritation quickly clutched at his chest.
Soon, he stopped the car in front of Evercrest Villa, its distinctive air of noble grandeur further evident after weathering time.
Vanessa stepped out of the car and was about to slip an arm through Nathan's, putting on their familiar charade of affection.
Just then, his phone rang.
He answered at once, looking nervous.
Vanessa's arm hovered mid-air as she looked down and saw the word "Babe" flashing on his screen.
Obviously, it was Susanna.
"Suzy." Sure enough, Nathan walked away, his gentle tone dripped with affection.
It sounded like Susanna was crying, and his words couldn't stem her tears at all.
Standing alone in the darkness, Vanessa gazed at him. A night breeze drifted by, and a sudden wave of loneliness sent a sharp pang through her heart.
The sight of him coaxing tenderly and the image of Susanna weeping pitifully twisted in her mind, and she just wanted to laugh bitterly.
She had gone with her parents on a charity visit to an orphanage at the age of ten. There, crouched in a corner, was an emaciated little girl, shivering from the cold, her tattered clothes full of holes.
Meeting the little girl's pleading eyes, Vanessa, always the soft-hearted one, had shed tears at once, giving the girl her toy and snacks while whispering with firmness, "Don't be afraid. We're here to help."
Under Vanessa's strong request, her parents—Beatrice Hamilton and Brian Dorsey—had decided on that day to adopt the little girl and take her in.
The little girl was Susanna.
From that day on, Vanessa had been nothing but nice to Susanna, sharing toys, buying her pretty dresses and shoes, doting on her as if they were real sisters.
For Susanna's sake, she had skipped classes and had even been reprimanded in front of the entire school.
As for Susanna, she had acted so dependent on Vanessa, always trailing Vanessa behind.
They had been inseparable.
But, before Vanessa realized it, Susanna had stolen Nathan's affections, snatching away everything that should have been hers.
Asking her parents to adopt Susanna was the most regretful decision she had ever made.
Had she known things would turn out like this, she would have turned a blind eye to Susanna back at the orphanage. Over the years, Susanna had known about her love for Nathan. And this was how Susanna repaid her kindness? By shamelessly taking him away on the verge of their wedding?
"Let's go." Just then, Nathan's voice rang out as he hooked her arm.
Snapping out of it, she shook his arm away instinctively.
He said coldly, "Vanessa, don't forget our deal."
She was stunned for a few seconds. Then she pulled out a smile and threaded her arm through his, and they walked toward the living room, looking exactly like a couple in love.
Chapter 5 The Gilded Prince
In the luxurious, solemn living room.
Seated at the head of the dining table, Madeline had been waiting for Vanessa and Nathan. To her right sat Nathan's parents, Clayton Powell and Casey Eaton.
"Vanny, come here and sit next to me," Madeline beamed with affection the moment she saw Vanessa.
"Good evening, Madeline," Vanessa smiled sweetly before greeting Clayton and Casey.
The second she sat down, Madeline gripped her hand tightly, looking at her affectionately.
Clayton's gaze on her and the gentle smile on Casey's face also indicated how satisfied they were with her.
The dinner soon started amid a tranquil, harmonious atmosphere.
She loved being part of this warm family. If only Nathan loved her, she would have been the happiest woman in the world.
As usual, a meeting followed right after the dinner finished. Clayton turned to Nathan, his expression serious. "Nathan, how's the Brentford Project going?"
Backed by the government, the Brentford Project was the flagship initiative in the entire Darvell Bay Commerce. Amid the economic downturn, winning this project held critical strategic value for the Powell Group. To put it bluntly, its success would determine whether the group could retain its crown as Brookford's wealthiest corporation in the next few years. Of course, Clayton paid great attention to it.
"In fact, we've met our match." Nathan furrowed his brows deeply.
"Who?" Clayton's expression darkened.
"Evander Carroll, the CEO of the Carroll Group." Nathan's gaze deepened.
"The Carroll Group?" Clayton was utterly surprised. "The one in Haverfield?"
"That's right." Nathan nodded. "I heard he's made major progress."
Hearing this, Clayton was slack-jawed.
The Carroll family, deeply rooted in Haverfield, had extensive ties to both military and political circles. In comparison, the Powell Group was just small fry. He didn't like the odds if the Carroll Group was also interested in the Brentford Project.
But... Wait.
Evander Carroll? Who was that? He had thought Terrence Carroll—the black sheep—was Leonard Carroll's only grandson.
Noticing his confusion, Madeline explained slowly, looking grave, "Clayton, Evander is Leonard's eldest grandson. Due to his fragile health and certain family feuds, Leonard sent him abroad when he was young, and he's never made any public appearance domestically. This is his first business venture since returning to assume his position. I'm afraid the battle is gonna be tough this time."
"I see." Clayton couldn't help but gasp.
He had been confident in winning the project, but not anymore.
But, as a seasoned businessman, he adjusted his mood quickly.
He said determinedly, "Nathan, not only those in Brookford—even conglomerates in Haverfield have their sights set on the Brentford Project. With profits this high, we shouldn't be surprised that the Carroll family wants it, too. Let's just keep our eyes on the prize. Losing isn't an option. We'll clear whoever stands in our way."
"I hear you, Dad." A cold glint flickered in Nathan's eyes as he nodded solemnly.
Evander?
How capable could he possibly be?
Rumors had it that he was an odd one—cold, distant, and never seen socializing with wealthy heirs or business tycoons. In fact, no one in their circle had ever met him.
Those whispers only piqued Nathan's interest in competing with him.
Vanessa lounged on the sofa the entire time, scrolling on her phone. She knew nothing about business and wasn't exactly paying attention to their conversation.
But the name Evander Carroll still reached her ears, leaving her sunned for a moment.
It wasn't that she was impressed by his capabilities. In fact, this wasn't even the first time she had heard his name—Kathleen had already mentioned him multiple times.
He was Kathleen's Prince Charming, the man she wanted to marry the most. She had asked around, and the socialites told her Evander would inherit the Carroll Group, which came with staggering wealth, and his striking features would make her scream.
Nathan was already a business prodigy, yet Evander was said to surpass him? Vanessa was a bit surprised to learn such a formidable figure would catch Kathleen's attention. Now, she was curious. What exactly did Evander look like?
Chapter 6 Her Freedom
"You brat, Nathan! You cheated on Vanny? How could you? Aren't you ashamed of yourself?" It was getting late, so Vanessa went to find Nathan to go home together. As she walked past the hallway, she heard Madeline's angry voice from the study.
She was stunned.
"I didn't, Grandma," Nathan denied it indignantly.
"Stop lying, you little bastard! You forced Vanny to act all affectionate with you in front of me, didn't you? You think I'm that easily fooled? You're wrong! I know everything. It's been five years since you married her, and you've never shared the bed with her? Instead, you've been spending time with that slut? You ignorant fool! What's so good about her? Vanny outshines her in every way! Are you stupid or what, choosing her over Vanny? You're such a disgrace to our family!" Madeline bellowed, the sound of her slamming the desk echoing in the room.
She had been kept in the dark until today. Yesterday had been Valentine's Day, and some paparazzi had snapped photos of Nathan with a woman acting intimate.
Seething with rage, she had immediately had someone look into it, only to uncover such a disgraceful secret that she nearly fainted. That was why she had summoned them back home.
"Grandma, Susanna's been the one I love. I don't love Vanessa at all and only married her because you forced me to. If it weren't for her, I would have lived happily with Suzy by now. You can't blame me," Nathan retorted stubbornly, his cheeks flushed.
"Shut up, you fool! Susanna's just the Dorsey family's adopted daughter. She's nothing compared to Vanny! Have you lost your mind? I'm warning you—don't see her ever again. Honor your marriage vows. I want a great-grandchild within two years, or I swear I'm gonna cut you off without a dime!" Madeline struck the desk, coughing violently with rage.
Mixed emotions tangled in Vanessa's heart.
While she hated seeing Madeline—who had always been kind to her—crushed by such a heavy blow, she was relieved at the same time. From now on, she'd never have to play along with Nathan anymore.
Now she could file for divorce with a perfectly valid reason.
Freedom was waving at her.
It had been five years. She had thought through and let go of a lot of things.
Marriage without love was grave, and she couldn't wait to get rid of it.
Nathan didn't love her at all, so why would she trap herself around him?
No. She'd find a new life, a new life that belonged to her only.
But the thought of Beatrice's inevitable distress twisted her heart.
She left the hallway quietly.
"Vanny." Casey linked arms with her with a warm smile as she entered the living room.
Presumably, Casey had known the truth, too.
Now she understood the trace of sympathy and pity hidden underneath Casey's gaze all day.
Before this, since she hadn't conceived a child after five years of marriage, Casey had always been dissatisfied with her, directly or indirectly mocking her and even forcing tonics good for fertility upon her.
"Vanny, come with me. I want a word with you," Casey smiled at her affectionately and then pulled her to a bedroom.
"What is it, Casey?" She was confused.
"Vanny, you gotta be patient with men. Sweet-talk them whenever you can. You know what? They're no different from kids. With enough coaxing, they'll stick to you like glue," Casey said.
She was even more baffled.
What was Casey suggesting?
"Just sit here. I'll be back in a second." Casey patted her shoulder before heading out with a mysterious smile.
She scratched her head. Before she could figure out what Casey meant, Nathan stepped into the room with a sullen face.
Chapter 7 Let's Get a Divorce
"Happy now, Vanessa? You finally had your way," upon seeing Vanessa sitting on the bed, Nathan scoffed with disdain.
"What are you talking about?" Vanessa scratched her nose, even more bewildered.
"Drop the act," he sneered. "You think telling them the truth will change anything? Get real, Vanessa. I'll never fall for you."
She widened her eyes, and it took her quite a while before she finally realized what he meant.
He thought she had told Madeline the truth.
But she didn't.
Instinctively, she wanted to explain. But on second thought, he'd never believed her or even cared about what she had to say.
Forget it. He could believe whatever he wanted.
Pursing her lips, she stood up and headed to the door.
She didn't have to go back with him tonight. After all, everyone knew they had been keeping up an act.
She'd go back alone.
However, as she reached the door, someone suddenly slammed it shut from the outside.
She immediately tried to push it, but it had been locked already.
"Vanny, stay here with Nathan tonight.
"Nathan, Madeline said you and Vanny will live here until she gets pregnant. Otherwise, you'll be cut off without a penny from the family fortune."
Casey's voice rang out.
Vanessa felt momentarily speechless.
After knowing she and Nathan had never slept together over the years, this was what his family resorted to?
Forcing them to share the bed?
She patted her forehead and rolled her eyes.
"Congratulations, Vanessa. This is exactly what you want, right?" Nathan's icy voice came from behind her. "You're literally the most scheming woman I've ever seen."
His resentment toward her grew deeper at her little tricks.
He loathed people with cunning little games the most.
"Your tricks are as cheap as you," he hissed.
Standing in place for a while, Vanessa looked up at the ceiling and shrugged.
It had been five years, and she had learned not to care about his snide remarks like this. In fact, she no longer gave a damn how he thought of her.
"Nathan, this is such a waste of time. Let's get a divorce," she suddenly smiled and turned around to say, looking all serious.
"A divorce?" He squinted, his gaze deepening. Then he said scornfully, "Yeah, right. Like you'll willingly surrender the title of Mrs. Powell and my family's fortune. Grandma has said you have fifty percent of the family's shares. All that will go away if we split. You seriously think I'll buy this crap?"
"I mean it," she insisted.
He snorted derisively, "Vanessa, you've been trying to make me care about you desperately over the years. Come on—you even committed suicide twice. Just stop lying, OK?"
The moment those painful memories resurfaced, Vanessa ran her fingers through her hair, and a flicker of anguish flashed in her eyes, almost fracturing her composure.
"That was before, Nathan. I'm telling the truth—I'm serious about getting a divorce. If you don't believe me, forget it," she sighed with frustration and couldn't be bothered to explain anymore.
"Just think about how we're gonna get through these next few days." Of course, Nathan didn't believe her. He took off his coat and walked toward the bathroom. The moment the cold water rushed over his head, the flashing pain in Vanessa's eyes suddenly emerged in his mind, causing his heart to twitch.
He didn't understand. Why would he feel this way?
After the shower, he found her on the sofa, twirling a lock of hair with her left fingers while holding the phone with her right hand. Her voice was so lazy and charming, and that smile on her face was simply captivating.
An inexplicable irritation gripped his heart.
He asked immediately, "Who are you talking to, Vanessa?"
Chapter 8 How Dare She?
"Alright then. I'll see you in a bit," Vanessa said before hanging up. Then she snapped her fingers at Nathan, smiling sweetly and softly, "I've come up with a perfect plan. You stay here tonight, and I'll get out. You can just tell Madeline later that you were asleep and didn't know when I left. Then you won't be blamed."
No matter what, Nathan was Madeline's grandson. It'd be a mess if Madeline really got upset with him and disowned him. On the contrary, she was just an outsider, which made things a lot easier.
Nathan's gaze fell upon Vanessa, and he said nothing. The genuine smile on her face made it clear—she wasn't lying. Instead, she indeed wanted to get out of here.
She had clung to him for years, and now, she didn't even want to stay in the same room with him? All of a sudden, he felt so irritated.
"How are you gonna get out?" he asked.
"I'll climb out from the window at the back. Someone will be there to pick me up."
"Who?" he asked right away. "This is the second floor. What if you fall?"
Hearing this, she glanced at him. Why was he so interested all of a sudden? He hated being with her, didn't he? Then why bother knowing the details now? What a hypocrite.
"Sorry. No comment. That's private," she shrugged, replying coolly.
His expression froze slightly.
"Go to bed, alright? Just ignore me. I'll leave in a short while. Don't worry—I won't share the room with you tonight." With her phone in hand, she sat back down on the sofa and started to enjoy music, totally ignoring him.
He didn't want to share the space with her? Likewise. The night he had spent with Susanna was so intense that Susanna ended up in the hospital, and the scene alone sickened her. She couldn't wait to leave.
Meanwhile, Nathan stood in place motionlessly. Did he just see disgust in Vanessa's eyes?
She loathed him? How dare she!
He instantly wanted to snap. But on second thought, he figured she was just playing hard to get. He knew her so well—maybe she was dying to sleep with him.
They were on the second floor. She didn't have the balls to jump down.
On top of that, the villa was heavily guarded with patrols everywhere, and no one could ever break in. Besides, who'd dare mess with the Powell family?
He'd never fall for her petty tricks.
With this in mind, he lay down and closed his eyes.
After a while, he heard Vanessa's deliberately light footsteps.
He instinctively grew wary—did she think he was asleep and decide to slip into his bed?
He turned around abruptly.
To his surprise, she was already making for the back window—like she couldn't wait to get out.
His heart sank. Did she mean it? Someone was here to pick her up?
But this was the second floor. What if she really fell and got hurt?
Exactly what was her plan?
Out of curiosity and concern, he got up and followed her quietly.
Amid the darkness, she swiftly opened the back window and slipped out.
By the time he trotted over, she had already made it to the terrace below. As he poked his head out, he actually saw a man there.
His heart skipped a beat. Since when did Vanessa know another man?
Just then, under the dim streetlight, he saw a woman steadying a ladder. Upon closer look, he recognized her. It was Kathleen, Vanessa's bestie.
He scoffed, his precious confusion and uneasiness vanishing at once. Kathleen was Vanessa's only bestie. Of course, Vanessa would turn to her. As for the man—well, he must have been Kathleen's friend who was here to help.
That made sense. Would Vanessa really give up being Mrs. Powell just to be with another man? He'd bet every penny he had that the answer was negative.
He had always been and always would be Vanessa's only love.
Watching them descend safely, he shrugged, turned around, and went back to bed.
